As part of the Pre-Registration Checklist, first-time college students will receive one of the following English Placements from the Guided Self Placement Questionnaire:
English C1000, English C1000+201, or ESL Assessment Recommended.
- Students who have completed 3 years of high school English with a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 2.6 (or higher) are placed into English C1000.Ìý
- Students whose GPA was below a 2.6 are placed into English C1000 + English 201. English 201 is a 2-unit support course. (This support package recommendation is optional; with this placement a student can enroll in stand-alone ENGL C1000.)
After completing theÌýGuided Self Placement Questionnaire, students can request higher English placement for second semester English — ENGL C1001, ENGL C1001H, ENG 70, ENG 2. If you have completed English Composition at another college/university or passed theÌýAdvanced Placement (AP) English Lang/Comp Exam or Lit/Comp Exam (score of 3 or higher), submit a Prerequisite Evaluation Request.

- College-level English Composition 1 is English C1000 (formerly English 1A).Ìý
- College-level English Composition 2 is English C1001 (formerly English 1B). Ìý
NOTE: These course name changes to adopt Common Course Numbering (CCN) are part of a statewide effort to streamline course identification and transfer across the state per AB 1111.
Other Placement Methods
Students who have not completed 3 years of high school English or earned a HS Diploma (or equivalency) in the United States will not receive English Placement from the Guided Self Placement Questionnaire.Ìý
Alternative placement options are available:
- English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are available for students whose primary language is not English. Speak with a counselor if you have questions about ESL Course Placement.
- F1 International Students receive Initial Math and English Placement from a counselor as part of the new student intake process. The International Student Program can be reached at 949-582-4637.
- K-12 Special Admits can clear English course prerequisites by submitting an English Prerequisite Evaluation Request with an accepted piece of evidence. (NOTE: English Appeal is required for students in 10th grade and lower.)
