Rising Scholars and Transition Assistance Plan (TAP) Workshop Rising Scholars Team: Jose Lumbreras, Liz Leguizamo, and Ryan Monte Free Expungement Clinic Event on April 4, 6-8pm in SSC 140 for students to discuss details and obtain DOJ records to assist in expungement of records, reduction of felonies, and the certificate of rehabilitation process. All current students, staff, family of students and alumni are eligible. Please share with your classes. This program originated when the VSS put a call-out to ask about anyone interested in serving incarcerated students; Interest was shown, the application was submitted, and a grant was awarded. These reps shared what has been done thus far with the grant. This program supports students who have been negatively impacted by the U.S. Judicial System by providing asset-based support for the duration of their higher education. Examples of support: student advocacy, resume building, mentorship, formerly incarcerated alumni speakers, expungement services, counseling etc Two student aides who were formerly impacted students are being hired to service as mentors. In order to be eligible for the program students must be enrolled at Saddleback and identify as formerly incarcerated or system impacted. A question about anonymity was brought up. How will it be handled for students who do not want their past to be known? Liz shared that the unique things about this program is that all the leaders are system impacted. The shared experiences often make students feel more comfortable in sharing. Also, in order to be helped, students will need to share their situation so that they can be supported. The Rising Scholar network promotes education and works to help students be successful in their educational journey. Faculty interested in joining the Workgroup should email scrisingscholars@saddleback.edu PowerPoint will be sent to all senators. Representational Areas Dan Walsh explained that due to the college reorg, the representational areas of Academic Senate need to be revisited. He shared our current number of senators which equates to 1 senator per 10 full-time faculty which gives us 28 total senators. Since we have reduced representational areas and they are not balanced, we need a new formula. A new proposed limit is a max of 4 per school/area/division (1 per 6 full-time faculty) and no more than 2 per department. This would give us a total of 25 senators. Anwar asked how the limit of 4 was decided. If the total per area was moved to 5, then SM and SH would get 5. Nancy asked why Academic Senators is based on full-time faculty and does not consider part-time. Margot Lovett replied that part-time numbers fluctuates. Dan Walsh added that the issues are different for full-time faculty and long-term issues. EvaMarie Rodriguez-Morris asked why EL has only one rep when there are so many different areas. Margot Lovett shared a concern over fairness if we up the number of senators above the formula. If it is raised for one area, then it should be raised for others. Discussions will continue and this will come back since changes to by-laws must come three times before a vote. Academic Senate Election Deidre Cavazzi shared that a call for elections was sent out earlier this week. Monday, March 27th is the due date to send your intent and statement to Christie Smead and Deidre Cavazzi. On Wednesday, March 29th, the names of those interested and statements will be mailed out with voting occurring over the following two weeks. Efren Rangel asked if you need to be a senator in order to apply. Deidre (with the help of Dan Walsh clarifying) responded that prior experience in Senate is not required for Secretary, but for the other positions you need one-year prior AS senator experience. Undocumented Workshop Efren Rangel shared two events happening at the Career Center: Wed., March 29th 1-2pm The UndocuHustle Wed., April 19th 1-2pm Networking: The Undocu Edition Flyer is in SharePoint folder. Upcoming Undocumented Students event: Friday, April 29th 3-5 in SSC 212, lunch provided, speakers, panel RSVP via following link: https://forms.gle/eSepM8prbV5txHhW9 COMMITTEE REPORTS Executive Dan Walsh updated the PP on AS Representation to give a max of 5 senators per area and Christie Smead will send the revised version to senators. He also clarified that on the Pass/No Pass piece- the State is mandating that it is the end of the semester and not 75% of the semester. Deidre Cavazzi clarified that end of the semester is the last day of finals not the last day of class instruction. Dan confirmed. College/Senate Committees None. REPRESENTATIONAL AREA REPORTS None.
